Ontario Maple Syrup Season in the Haliburton Highlands
Sometimes the most fascinating aspects of the human experience are the things we take for granted every day, and Ontario maple syrup is no exception. Very few things are as Canadian as the beloved sugar maple, the inspiration for our national emblem, decorator of our fall landscapes, and of course, the source of the sweet sap from which syrup is created. Often considered the harbinger of spring, the Ontario maple syrup season is nature's way of telling us, "It's time to go outside!" As such, All-Seasons Cottage Rentals invites you to stay with us while exploring the Haliburton Highlands during one of our favourite and most unique times of the year.
Sweet Escapes: An Ontario Maple Syrup Tour
While it might be common knowledge to those of us residing in the Highlands, you may be surprised to know that there are several Ontario maple syrup producers in Haliburton County alone! Whether in Haliburton, Algonquin Park, Minden, or Dorset, visitors will find a wide range of sugar shacks, bushes, and shops. To help you wade through the gooey goodness, we put together a sweet guide to some of our favourite syrup slingers in the Haliburton Highlands.
Esson Creek is a family-run Ontario maple syrup operation that utilizes state-of-the-art production methods using reverse osmosis, wood-fire evaporation, and a filtration press. Located in Wilberforce, Esson Creek's team is passionate about their craft and offers samples, sales, and tours. And for you rockhounds out there, they also have an impressive collection of minerals.
Notable mostly for their dog sledding tours, the folks over at Winterdance seem to know a thing or two about Ontario maple syrup as well. With 2000 taps equipped with gravity-powered pipelines, the Winterdance sugar shack is roughly 300 feet below the bush! Although the processes are similar, Winterdance has turned maple syrup production from an art to a science.
